Hunger in the United States
One of the most disturbing and extraordinary aspects of life in this very wealthy country is the persistence of hunger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that in 2005:

• 35.1 million people lived in households considered to be food insecure.
• Of those 35.1 million, 22.7 million are adults (10.4 percent of all adults) and 12.4 million are children (16.9 percent of all children).
• The number of people in the worst-off households (previously called “food insecure with hunger” and now called “very low food security” households) rose in 2005, from 10.7 to 10.8 million.

Bread for the World, a nationwide Christian movement that seeks justice for the world's hungry people by lobbying our nation's decision makers, is co-sponsoring: Sowing Seeds: Growing a Movement Gathering 2007; June 9-12, Washington, D.C.
Thousands of people of faith and conscience will gather in our nation’s capital to sow the seeds of a movement to end hunger. The gathering hopes to:

• Revive spirits and renew commitment to the task of ending hunger.
• Develop new skills for motivating people and mobilizing faith communities.
• Strategize about how best to influence our nation’s decision-makers.
• Visit representatives’ and senators’ offices on Capitol Hill to speak out for hungry people.
• Plan what will be done in the coming months and years to seek justice for hungry and poor people in our country and around the world.

Join the gathering to sow seeds of change in a nation and a world where too many people are still hungry. Visit www.bread.org for more information. If you cannot join the gathering in Washington, DC determine one small thing you can do to sow the seeds of a movement to end hunger.
