A congregation of 167 women religious, we follow the Third Order Regular Rule of St. Francis and are part of the Franciscan Federation, which numbers 12,300 in the United States and more than 100,000 world wide. Our congregation came into existence in Philadelphia in 1854. As numbers increased, small groups of sisters were sent to Utica, Syracuse and Buffalo, New York. In 1871, the Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale became an independent foundation after a group of sisters traveled from Buffalo to Pittsburgh to serve in hospital ministry and their numbers steadily grew. The Millvale Franciscans continue to serve locally, regionally and globally in a variety of ministries, including healthcare, education and social services.
